
Doug Williams, most valuable player of the 1988 Super Bowl for the Washington Redskins, was named as football coach at Morehouse College, an NCAA Division II school in Atlanta.
Williams, a Louisiana native who played at Grambling State University, had been serving as an NFL scout with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He replaces Mo Hunt.
Williams had been mentioned as the possible successor to longtime Grambling coach Eddie Robinson when he retires after the 1997 season. . . .
As a tribute to his mother, former Michigan State basketball star Steve Smith said he is giving a $2.5 million gift to the university to help student-athletes.
Michigan State announced that the donation will be used for an academic center for young student-athletes. The money also will fund the Steve Smith Scholarship for Detroit Pershing High School, an endowment that will help pay college costs for students who want to attend Michigan State.

The gift from Smith, now with the Atlanta Hawks, is the largest known donation to any university by a professional athlete, Michigan State officials said. . . .
Kentucky men's basketball coach Rick Pitino, who sold his share in a Lexington restaurant about two years ago, is getting back into the Italian food business with his own brand of imported pasta.
"The primary reason, believe it or not, is not financial, it's to eat," Pitino said. "This is one company I'll enjoy owning."
The new product, which will be called Pitino Pasta, is still in development, the coach said. No timetable has been set for its release. Pitino Pasta is expected to be sold in Kentucky and surrounding states. . . .
